Amaryllis That Rebloom Every Year

An amaryllis bulb is not a one-season decoration. Planted in a pot and cared for after flowering, the same bulb can flower again every winter for many years. That makes it one of the most sustainable flowers you can bring into your home.

Potted bulbs or wax amaryllis?

Wax amaryllis are a beautiful, no-effort gift: the bulb flowers on the energy it already contains, without soil or water. Because it cannot take up water or nutrients while sealed in wax, it is usually spent after flowering. With some care it can sometimes be saved, as we explain in what to do with a waxed amaryllis after it blooms.

A bulb grown in a pot keeps building up strength after it flowers. Its leaves feed the bulb through spring and summer, so it is ready to flower again the following winter.

The yearly cycle in five steps

  1. After flowering: cut the faded flower stem just above the bulb, but keep the leaves.
  2. Spring and summer: keep the pot in a light spot, water when the soil is dry and feed regularly. From late spring it can stand outside in a sheltered place.
  3. Late summer: stop watering and let the leaves die back.
  4. Rest: give the bulb a cool, dry rest of about 8 weeks. Read more in how to store amaryllis bulbs for reblooming.
  5. Autumn: repot in fresh soil, water lightly and move to a warm, light place. A new flower stem follows.
