Wax Amaryllis Not Growing? 6 Reasons and How to Fix Them
By Vitaliy Tonenchuk, Dutch Bulbs B.V. Updated 2 November 2026.
You placed your wax amaryllis on the shelf a week ago and nothing has happened. No green tip, no stem, no sign of life. In most cases nothing is wrong: amaryllis bulbs work to their own schedule, and a few small adjustments can speed them up.
Quick answer: A wax amaryllis usually needs three to six weeks to flower, and the first green tip can take one to two weeks to show. If yours is slow, the cause is almost always a room that is too cool or too dark. Move it somewhere bright at about 18 to 22 °C, do not water it, and give it another two weeks.
How long does a wax amaryllis take to bloom?
Longer than most people expect. University of Missouri Extension notes that an amaryllis needs six to eight weeks from the start of growth to flowering, and University of Wisconsin Extension Master Gardeners give the same six to eight weeks. A wax amaryllis usually moves a little faster, typically three to six weeks from the day you place it in a bright, warm spot. Count from the day you set the bulb out, not from the day you ordered it.
What is slowing it down?
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing after 1 to 2 weeks | Normal: the bulb is still waking up | Wait, and keep it warm and bright |
| No growth in a cool room | Too cold | Move it to a room at 18 to 22 °C |
| Thin, weak, leaning stem | Too little light | Move it to a bright window; turn it every few days |
| Flowers open fast and fade | Too close to heat | Move it away from radiators and fires |
| Cracked or peeling wax | Damaged coating | Handle gently; do not water |
| Tall stem falling over | Top-heavy flowers | Support the stem with a slim stick |
The six causes, and the fix for each
- Not enough time yet. The first sign is a pale green tip through the top of the wax. The stem then grows several centimetres in a few days, and buds follow. If the bulb is firm and the wax is intact, give it time.
- The room is too cold. A bulb in a cool hallway will wait. University of Missouri Extension’s pest-management team warns that temperatures below 10 °C can injure amaryllis; growth slows well before that. Moving the bulb to a warmer room is the single most effective fix.
- Not enough light. In a dark corner the stem stays small or grows thin. Choose an east or west-facing window and turn the bulb a quarter turn every few days so the stem grows straight.
- Too close to heat. Warmth speeds flowering and cool slows it, as University of Wisconsin Extension notes. A bulb on a radiator flowers fast and fades fast. Warm and bright is good; hot is not.
- Damaged wax. A cracked coating lets the bulb dry out or take in moisture. Handle it gently and never water it: the coating does that job, and water can rot the bulb.
- A tall stem falling over. A good problem. Lean the bulb against a wall or among other bulbs, or add a slim stick beside the stem.

What should the timeline look like?
| When | What you should see |
|---|---|
| Week 0 | Bulb placed in a bright, warm spot |
| Weeks 1 to 2 | A pale green tip appears through the wax |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | The stem grows quickly; buds form |
| Weeks 3 to 6 | The buds open into flowers |
These are typical ranges: a cooler room stretches every stage.

Frequently asked questions
Should I water a wax amaryllis that is not growing?
No. Watering does not help and can crack the wax or rot the bulb. The bulb already holds everything it needs.
Can I speed up a wax amaryllis?
Yes, by moving it to a warmer, brighter place. Avoid direct heat, which makes the flowers open and fade faster.
What do I do with the bulb after it flowers?
You can try peeling the wax and replanting it. See what to do with waxed amaryllis after it blooms.
