Our story

Founded in the Netherlands in 2009.

Dutch Bulbs started in the Netherlands in 2009 with one goal: to make planting material from Dutch growers easier to buy for gardeners and flower lovers across Europe, without a long chain of intermediaries. As more customers asked for amaryllis, we created Amarylia, a shop devoted entirely to amaryllis bulbs.

With amaryllis, the bulb decides the flower. A large, healthy bulb of the right variety, stored correctly and planted at the right time, gives you two or more stems of large flowers in about 7–10 weeks. That is why we focus on one plant, and do it carefully: from cultivar choice and bulb size to storage and timing.

Our mission is to make growing amaryllis simple for beginners and rewarding for collectors: clear information about each variety, honest bulb sizes, and practical advice so you can plan flowers for a particular moment, from early winter to Christmas and beyond.

  • Regular amaryllis flower about 7–10 weeks after planting.
  • Wax amaryllis flower in about 4–8 weeks, with no pot, soil or water.
  • Bulb size (circumference in cm) tells you what to expect: larger bulbs usually give more stems and more flowers.

Why amaryllis from the Netherlands?

Specialist breeding and cultivation of Hippeastrum.

The Netherlands is a centre of amaryllis breeding and bulb production. Dutch breeders develop new cultivars, from large-flowered and double forms to compact, spider and trumpet types, and growers produce the bulbs under controlled conditions so they build up the reserves needed for strong flower stems.

The Dutch Flower Bulb Inspection Service (BKD) supervises the trade in flower bulbs, including checks for plant health and quality requirements. Dutch-Bulbs B.V. is a registered BKD member.

How we work with growers

From the grower to your order.

An amaryllis bulb is a living product, and its condition matters at every step. This is how we work with growers and prepare your order.

  1. 01 / Selecting cultivarsChoosing varieties We build the range with breeders and growers: single and double flowers, compact, spider and trumpet forms, and wax amaryllis.
  2. 02 / SizingMeasuring the bulbs Every variety is sold with its bulb circumference in centimetres, for example 26/28, 28/30 or 30/32 cm.
  3. 03 / StorageClimate-controlled storage Bulbs are kept in climate-controlled storage in Voorhout until dispatch.
  4. 04 / Packing and dispatchReady for delivery Each order is picked, checked by hand and packed in breathable packaging, then shipped with tracking, all year round.

We also follow the Dutch amaryllis sector closely, for example the open-field cultivation at Park Amaryllis and the varieties shown at Keukenhof.

Quality control

Four checks before your bulbs ship.

  1. 01 / At the growerVariety and order We check the cultivar, quantity and the information supplied with the bulbs.
  2. 02 / On arrivalSize and condition We check circumference, firmness, visible damage and signs of disease. A bulb sold as 30/32 cm must measure 30–32 cm.
  3. 03 / In storageDormancy We monitor temperature and humidity and check that bulbs stay firm and dormant.
  4. 04 / Before dispatchFinal order check We check completeness, protection of the bulbs, labelling and the delivery address.

Our sizes and packaging

Measured bulbs, packed to arrive dormant and firm.

Every amaryllis is sold with its circumference in centimetres. Large-flowered varieties are usually 26/28 cm or bigger, our top size is 30/32 cm and larger; compact Sonatini and some spider varieties naturally form smaller bulbs. Bulbs travel in breathable packaging that keeps them dry and protects them against knocks and temperature swings. Our sizes and quality →
