About Amaryllis Bulbs and Flowers

Amaryllises are also known by their botanical name: Hippeastrum. In ancient Greek, ‘amaryllis’ is amarusso which means ‘I sparkle’. And it really is fascinating to watch the transformation from bulb to flower. The radiant flowers emerge as if by magic from a big straight stem. Their majestic flower bulbs develop into equally impressive flowers. What’s more, there are more than 400 varieties.

How to plant Amaryllis Bulbs?

Plant your amaryllis in potting mix with the top third of the bulb sticking up out of the soil. Place the pot near a bright window, where it can receive a lot of sunlight. When the bulb sprouts, begin watering regularly around the bulb. After sprouting, turn the pot regularly, because stalks will grow toward the sunlight.

Flowering Period

Amaryllis Bulbs flower within 7–10 weeks after planting. In winter, the flowering time will be longer than in spring. Set up your planting schedule between October and April with this in mind.

How to Plant?

Guide and tips for planting amaryllis(hippeastrum) bulbs

  • Choose a pot that is at least 4 cm wider than the bulb and has drainage holes in the bottom.
  • Fill the pot with well-draining soil, leaving about 2 cm of space at the top.
  • Place the bulb in the center of the pot, with the pointed end facing up.
  • Cover the bulb with soil, leaving the top one-third of the bulb exposed.
  • Water the soil until it is evenly moist, but not waterlogged.
  • Place the pot in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight.
  • Water the plant only when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch.
  • As the plant grows, support the stalk with a stake to prevent it from bending or breaking.
  • After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with bright, indirect sunlight.
