Papilio is the famous “butterfly amaryllis” – and one of the most unusual amaryllis you can grow. Its slender, gracefully curved flowers look like an orchid or a butterfly in flight: creamy white to pale green petals, finely veined and striped with burgundy red, opening around a greenish-yellow throat.
Papilio is a favourite with collectors and anyone looking for something other than the classic round amaryllis. It makes a striking centrepiece on its own and lasts well as a cut flower.

Guide and tips for planting amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulbs
- Choose a pot that is at least 4 cm wider than the bulb and has drainage holes in the bottom.
- Fill the pot with well-draining soil, leaving about 2 cm of space at the top.
- Place the bulb in the centre of the pot, with the pointed end facing up.
- Cover the bulb with soil, leaving the top one-third of the bulb exposed.
- Water once until the soil is evenly moist, then keep it only slightly moist until the first shoot appears.
- Place the pot in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight.
- As the plant grows, support the stalk with a stake if needed.
- After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and keep the leaves growing. See our Planting and Care guide for reblooming.
